Good Samaritan Hospital proudly announces a groundbreaking achievement in the fight against lung cancer. Recently, a dedicated team of the hospital’s multidisciplinary physicians and staff successfully performed a historic first-in-kind procedure at their San Jose-based hospital, utilizing advanced technologies to diagnose, stage and resect early-stage lung cancer in a single anesthetic event (SAE).

The multidisciplinary team, comprised of thoracic surgeons, interventional pulmonologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, and supported by the endoscopy department, operating room staff and radiology department, employed state-of-the-art technology to achieve this remarkable feat. The innovative technologies used included Robotic Assisted Navigation Bronchoscopy (RANB), Endobronchoscopic Ultrasound (EBUS), advanced fluoroscopy for intraoperative scanning, rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE), and video-assisted thoracotomy (VATS).

This pioneering procedure involved a 76-year-old male patient with a history of stage I lung cancer, who had previously undergone a right upper lobe lobectomy five years ago. During routine surveillance, a new nodule was detected in the right lobe. In just about four hours, the multidisciplinary team at Good Samaritan Hospital successfully completed the diagnosis, staging, and resection of the new stage I lung cancer, all under a single anesthetic event.

The patient's recovery was swift, and he was discharged home within 72 hours, exemplifying the efficiency and effectiveness of this advanced, integrated approach to lung cancer treatment.

"This achievement underscores the exceptional capabilities of our dedicated team and the cutting-edge technology we have at Good Samaritan Hospital," said Dr. Richard Briones, Chief Medical Officer of Good Samaritan Hospital. "Our commitment to providing the highest level of care and innovative treatment options continues to drive our success in improving patient outcomes."

Good Samaritan Hospital remains at the forefront of medical innovation and is dedicated to offering state-of-the-art treatments and compassionate care to the community.
