Good Samaritan Hospital Begins $30 Million Emergency Department Expansion

Good Samaritan Hospital has embarked on a $30 million expansion of its Emergency Department. The project, scheduled to be completed in 2019, will more than double the Department’s current square footage and will provide for faster patient diagnosis and treatment.

The Emergency Department’s new exterior and interior renovations have all been designed to serve the community with compassionate, quality care. In addition to a new exterior walk-in entry and drop-off canopy for incoming patients, the expanded Emergency Department includes a new ambulance drop-off canopy and five ambulance parking spaces.

When first entering the Emergency Department, patients will be evaluated immediately by medical staff and assigned to an appropriate treatment room. The new interior will feature 34 treatment rooms, including four specifically for pediatric patients.

Dedicated EKG, radiography and CT rooms, trauma/cardiac rooms, a blood draw station, and care treatment stations will be created to focus on individual patient needs and to reduce overall wait time. The facility will include separate waiting rooms for adults and children.

“We pride ourselves on delivering high quality, compassionate care to every person who comes through our Emergency Department doors,” said Joe DeSchryver, CEO of Good Samaritan Hospital. “This expansion provides our community with increased access to emergency services. At the same time, we are excited to be able to create an updated and comfortable environment.”

Throughout the construction, which will be led by architect Perkins and Will, and by general contractor Layton Construction, the Emergency Department will remain open and fully operational to serve the needs of the community. Good Samaritan Hospital will continue to receive CalSTAR air ambulance transfers from six county regions, as it is uniquely equipped to treat complex cardiology, stroke and cerebrovascular cases. The hospital is a Santa Clara County-designated STEMI receiving center and has one of the nation’s first Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers.

The hospital’s Respiratory Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and Health Information Services departments will be relocated as the interior renovations proceed.
